Discipline the beast. Master the shadow.

About me – Otso Lappalainen

This is a marketing channel for a better way of living, built from my own experiences. It is not for men chasing hot takes on politics or culture wars. It is for men who want to build themselves in mind, body, and spirit.

Here you will find practical and actionable advice to help you live your best life. I have walked the labyrinth and left the trail for you to follow. You will, of course, wander off and make your own mistakes, but that is part of the process. You can always return, pick up where you left off, and keep moving forward. Growth comes only through action and experimentation.

Discipline the Beast. Master the shadow.

Ideally, the kind of men I am looking for are:

  • Millennial or younger
  • White-collar job in a metropolitan city
  • Unsure of who they are
  • Out of shape and overweight

If that is you, then you are exactly the kind of person I am looking for, because I was that man.

If you see enemies everywhere, think the world conspires against you, and blame every group except your own, this is not for you. Not yet. Come back when you are ready to face the only opponent that matters: yourself.

This is a battle against no one except yourself. This is a channel for finding the self-discipline to tame that anger and channel it in a better direction.

I am not here to be a wannabe personal trainer or life coach. I am here to communicate better ideas and perspectives so we can all have a more critical, well-rounded view of how we experience the world.

Algorithmic social media wants us to care about hot takes, turn us against one another, and create enemies under the illusion that we are saving the world. There is a better way to live than black-and-white thinking. It is also not about longing for some golden age from a bygone era.

If I can improve myself and get my life sorted out, then you can too. If someone who has failed as much as I have can make something of his life, so can anyone. You just need to work for it.

From self-hatred to self-love.

A decade ago, I was fat, insecure, insincere, tired, and prone to mood swings. The moment that finally pushed me toward change was realising I was going bald. It may seem irrelevant now, but I remember telling myself I did not want to end up looking like a fat Bruce Willis.

I hired a trainer, started training regularly, and never quit. Over time, self-hatred became self-love. I began taking care of myself, studying philosophy, diet, and self-help, and building a career in software development. The road has never been straight, but I have never given up. And neither should you. Life is never a straight line. Even I get lost in the labyrinth.

You will find my thoughts and rambles on:

  • Fitness and diet nutrition
  • Practicing bro science and experimenting through trial and error
  • White-collar career and general life advice for a metropolitan

For me, this platform is also a practice in better communication so I can eventually become a better coach. So feel free to explore this space on the internet.
